BREEAM

BREEAM is currently the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for assessing, rating and certifying buildings and recognises the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle.

It provides a sustainability rating based on a buildings environmental performance assessed against a series of credit issues within ten key principle categories. Water being one of them.

BREEAM Water is included in New construction, BREEAM in Use and Refurbishment and Fitout and encourages sustainable water use in the operation of the building and its site. Issues in this section focus on identifying means of reducing potable water consumption (internal and external) over the lifetime of the building and minimising losses through leaks.

WAT02 Water Monitoring
Aim: To ensure water consumption can be monitored and managed and therefore encourage reductions in water consumption.

WAT03 Water leak detection
Aim: To reduce the consumption of potable water in new buildings through minimising wastage due to water leaks. Water leaks in building systems are responsible for major damage to property resulting in major disruption and costs. It is, therefore, important to ensure that water leaks are detected and controlled on a building level as early as possible.
